changing of the seasons

With Summer waving goodbye for another year and Winter taking its place, it’s time to get out the scarves, jumpers and woolly hats once again.

Wondering how to keep warm, look stylish and also get the most out of your summer clothes in the process? Look no further than these tips to transition your wardrobe into Winter.

Layer it up

Layering is by far the easiest way to transition your wardrobe from summer to winter. Shorts can be worn with thick dark tights (choose 100 denier or wool ones for a really cosy approach) and accompanied with a knitted jumper, ankle boots or knee-high boots and a jacket. Choose material such as denim, leather-look or wool for your shorts out of your summer wardrobe so that you have the thick material to keep you warm.

Colour it right

Stow away bright and pastel items in your wardrobe and opt for autumnal colours such as burgundy, emerald, caramel and black. Emerald green and caramel was seen all over the A/W16 catwalks including neutral but effective pieces from the Stella McCartney collection. Before you write toffee, butterscotch and caramel colours off, try pairing a buttermilk-shade dress over leggings or the traditional trench coat.

Add-on accessories

Bobble hats are really popular this season with Urban Outfitters, New Look and Superdry stocking some lovely designs – you won’t have to worry about a bad hair day ever again! Patterned scarves are also having a moment and can lighten up a plain outfit. If you want something luxe to throw on in the evening over a smart outfit, try one of Zara’s long velvet scarves. At £9.99 and in three different colours, they’re a bargain as well as being a stylish way to vamp up your outfit. Ponchos are also having a moment and can be a great excuse for wearing something that feels like a duvet to lectures!

Playsuits

American socialite Olivia Palermo is the number one fashion expert when it comes to rompers. As seen in the picture, she styles a striped playsuit with a belt to cinch in her waist, thick black tights and a turtleneck jumper to transform her summer wardrobe into something wearable for winter. This look is great if you’re on placement or carrying out work experience for a company as a playsuit is smart enough for the office provided you pair it with smart shoes. For lectures, wear it with a denim jacket and trainers to be more casual.

Summer dresses

Summer dresses are the easiest transitional items to wear and can be bought at the end of season sales too, meaning you can save money and still look great during every season. Pair your favourite summer dresses with a shirt (denim always looks cool), underneath a sweater or with a shearling-style jacket and add a beanie hat, thick socks and boots depending on the weather. T-shirt dresses are a simple alternative – buy them in block colours and layer under a long-sleeve t-shirt, adding tights when the weather gets even colder.
