Stevie Walters, a Swansea University Alumna, tells us how Dezrez Legal are using Swansea University Employability Academy’s Work Placement Programmes to find their next generation of staff.
Why did you choose to study Law at Swansea University? How was your time here?
I have always loved Swansea and being close to the sea and my family. I loved living in the student village, met some of the best people and made lifelong friends. The university had the perfect mix of academic stimulation and outside activities. Both the undergraduate degree and LPC were challenging and this was such a fantastic experience and has really assisted in my career.
What has influenced your career decisions?
I was influenced by the several work experience placements and the job market available at the time. I undertook a 3 month secondment during my training contract within a busy residential conveyancing department and I loved the area straightaway. I found the client contact and legal knowledge required for the role was perfect for me and I loved working with a close team. I never expected to take on the role of internal trainer, however this has been an amazing learning process and allowed me to expand my own knowledge and deliver internal legal training to all staff regarding updates in the law, current policy and procedures. This has been such a rewarding element to my career and will hopefully continue for many years to come, to encourage and support all our staff with their own path and legal careers.
How did you get your current job with Dezrez Legal?
I had heard of Dezrez Legal through many colleagues working within the local area as a new type of law firm which specialised in residential conveyancing but which dealt with property transactions all over England and Wales. I attended an interview with two company directors at their waterfront offices and was offered the job the very same day.
Why did you come back to Swansea University to offer placements to our current students?
Due to my own experiences of the support provided by the staff at the university and having links with the College of Law and Criminology it made perfect sense to offer work placements to Swansea University students. We are also fully aware that our business is expanding and wish to attract the best students to be the next generation of legal assistants, managers and Legal Conveyancers. We want to ensure that we hone the local talent and give students a great experience of working within a modern day law firm.
All work placements organised by Swansea Employability Academy are now available via our Employment Zone alongside graduate opportunities and part-time student work. Find out where your career will take you at myuni.swansea.ac.uk/employmentzone
